The Depths of Lakes and Oceans

How deep are earth's oceans? This graphic from popular webcomic site xkcd published in April, 2012 puts the stunning figures in easily-relatable perspective. The illustration shows to scale (vertically) the comparison of depths across different bodies of water. Seeing how quickly sunlight fades to black is one thing, but how far we drill for oil or boredom (looking at you, Russia) is just incredible.

Fun Fact: The "mysterious door" at the bottom of the Marianas Trench may be fictional, but the journey undertaken by James Cameron was very real. In 2012, Cameron visited the 7-mile deep trench in his mini-sub, the Deepsea Challenger, only the third person ever to do so.
