When asking photographers what the top camera is, the reply often is "the best camera is the one you have with you."

During an Antarctic Peninsula expedition in 2013, Dr. Andrew Peacock illustrated the point perfectly. While sea-kayaking at Neko Harbour with a colleague, Peacock looked down in the frigid waters to see this leviathan silently gliding up to and under his vessel. Grabbing a camera from his chest pouch he was able to take the incredible image above: a 6-meter (20 ft) Antarctic Minke whale just beneath the icy surface, seeming to emerge from the glacial outcrop towering in the background.

Dr. Peacock's photo is even more unique, as the Minke, a species of baleen whale, is not usually known for being this social.

Note to self: never, ever kayak in the Antarctic.
