This classic photograph by Gordon Parks first appeared in LIFE magazine on December 22, 1958. In the vintage image, three showgirls enjoy a game of chess between scenes at the Latin Quarter Nightclub in New York City; the juxtaposition of eroticism and intellect captured in the warm glow of dressing room lights.

Originally opened by Lou Walters (father of Barbara Walters) in 1942, the Latin Quarter was situated at the north end of Times Square. The club competed with the famous Copacabana Nightclub for big-name acts throughout the mid-century.

A c4 opening and queen out on the second move? Somebody's middle name is Danger!
