Squaw With Child at Train Station, c. 1930

Squaw With Child at Train Station, c. 1930

Housed within the print department of the Boston Public Library, this beautiful photo was taken by Leslie Jones, a photojournalist for the Boston Herald-Traveler. In the image dated c. 1930, a young Native-American woman holds an infant, her gaze pulled elsewhere as empty tracks blur into the distance. The intensity of her expression gives the woman a striking beauty that seems out of place with her surroundings.

During his 39 years at the newspaper, Jones captured countless images of events and activities in and around Boston, using both glass plate and film to create beautifully detailed images of daily life. His incredible collection of Native-American photos are just a fraction of the 40,000 image collection archived at Boston Public Library.
