"Mr. President, a second aircraft has hit the World Trade Center."

Tuesday, September 11, 2001.

On this Tuesday morning President George Bush is reading The Pet Goat to second-grade students at Emma T. Booker Elementary School in Sarasota, Florida. At 9:06am, AP photographer Doug Mills captures the moment when Bush's Chief of Staff Andrew Card whispers in the President's right ear, “Mr. President, a second aircraft has hit the World Trade Center. America’s under attack."

President Bush would remain seated, reading to the children for nearly 8 more minutes. His calm composure in front of the students was praised initially, but as criticism for the administration's preparedness and response of the attacks grew, the 'Pet Goat' moment was often used by media as an example of an indecisive or even indifferent presidency.
