Dali Atomicus, 1948

Via: photoandvideography

This iconic 1948 photograph of surrealist artist Salvador Dali was created by Philippe Halsman.  Echoing Dali's work Leda Atomica, the photo was meant to explore the idea of suspension, while also exploring the depths of patience for all involved.

There was no extensive editing or computer enhancements; only preparation, timing and repetition.  Various assistants tossed buckets of water and cats, Dali did his best to time his jump and Halsman tried to capture the perfect moment.

In between takes and processing, the whole set (and cats) had to be cleaned and re-staged.  Getting the right shot would take 6 hours, with cats, water and Dali airborne a total of 28 times.
