A Beautiful Shipwreck, 1912

Via: dailymail

April 6, 1912

The barquentine Mildred, carrying cargo from Newport to London, finds itself in a dense fog while passing under Gurnard's Head, Cornwall. As Captain Larcombe tries to navigate through the midnight haze the ship strikes rock, sinking with the sails still set. Fortunately the captain and crew of five are able to row ashore to St. Ives.

Photo above from the Gibson family collection, a compilation of images capturing Cornish shipwrecks gathered over 130 years and four generations of photographers in the family. The collection contains 1,000 negatives of over 200 ships from 1827 - 1997 wrecked off the treacherous coast of Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly. The collection was sold in a Sotheby's auction last year for over $200,000.
