This is the only known authenticated photograph of 'Billy the Kid', infamous outlaw of the American Old West. The metallic portrait is believed to have been taken in 1879 or 1880, and captures The Kid (born William Henry McCarty) standing outside a saloon in Fort Sumner, New Mexico. One hand rests on the tip of a Winchester carbine, while the other hangs close to a Colt .45 pistol holstered at his hip.

It is believed Billy the Kid himself gave this portrait to his friend and cattle rustling partner Dan Dedrick. The photo stayed in the possession of Dedrick descendants until 2011, when it was purchased by billionaire businessman William Koch at auction for a staggering 2.3 million dollars.
