The first recorded description of surfing was by Joseph Banks aboard HMS Endeavor, 1779.
Forbidden to the point of near-extinction with the arrival of European missionaries in the early 1800's, a few pockets of activity around the islands survived to make a resurgence with the beginning of the 20th Century.
