Turkish Official Dangles Bread Over Starving Villagers During Armenian Genocide
From the collection of St. Lazar Mkhitarian Congregation, this photo from 1915 depicts a Turkish official dangling bread in a gesture of mockery in front of starving villagers during the Armenian Genocide.
Sometimes known as the Armenian Holocaust, it was the Ottoman government's systematic extermination of its minority Armenian subjects from their historic homeland in the area known today as the Republic of Turkey. Between 1915 and 1923, an estimated 1 to 1.5 million Armenians lost their lives in an organized purpose and manner, resulting in the classification of genocide by many scholars, a label hotly contested by Turkish government and citizens.
