15-Year-Old Grand Duchess Anastasia & Her Father, Tsar Nicholas II, 1916

In a display of happier times and differing cultural norms, 15-year-old Grand Duchess Anastasia is seen enjoying a cigarette with her father, Tsar Nicholas II. The photograph, dated 1916, was found with several others in a vault of the history museum of Zlatoust, a small city in western Russia.

Times would change quickly for father and daughter, as the Emperor and Autocrat of All the Russias, along with his wife and five children, would be executed by Bolshevik forces within two years; the 300-year Romanov dynasty ending abruptly in a 6x5 meter basement room in the early hours of July 17, 1918.
