This photograph from January, 2012 shows the human element of a tense situation. During the protests against austerity measures in Bucharest, photojournalist Iona Moldovan captured a Romanian child offering a heart-shaped balloon to a member of a riot police phalanx.

The second frame caught the moment that followed, with the composition of the officer in full riot gear holding the balloon creating an image no less dramatic.
