Sometimes known as the Armenian Holocaust, it was the Ottoman government's systematic extermination of its minority Armenian subjects from their historic homeland in the area known today as the Republic of Turkey. Between 1915 and 1923, an estimated 1 to 1.5 million Armenians lost their lives in an organized purpose and manner, resulting in the classification of genocide by many scholars, a label hotly contested by Turkish government and citizens.
